Pure Kanjivaram silk sarees have the following characteristics:
  • Fabric: The fabric should be soft, smooth, and have a slight sheen.
  • Designs: The designs should be intricate and elaborate.
  • Thread count: Authentic Kanjivaram sarees have a high thread count, usually around 80-120 per inch.
  • Border and pallu: The border and pallu of the saree should be heavier than the body of the saree.
  • Zari: The saree should have a characteristic “Zari” or gold threadwork.
  • Blurred joints: The joint between the pallu and the body of an original Kanjivaram silk saree is always zigzag-blurred.
  • Shine: When kept at an angle towards the light, the saree will shine and the color will pop out.
To identify a pure Kanjivaram silk saree, you can also try the following:
  • Pass the silk saree through a wedding ring. An original Kanjivaram saree will go through the ring orifice without any difficulty.
  • Rub your palm on the saree to check the texture. A pure Kanchipuram saree is made from pure mulberry silk, which is different in texture as compared to fake ones.
