Pure Kanjivaram silk sarees have the following characteristics:
- Fabric: The fabric should be soft, smooth, and have a slight sheen.
- Designs: The designs should be intricate and elaborate.
- Thread count: Authentic Kanjivaram sarees have a high thread count, usually around 80-120 per inch.
- Border and pallu: The border and pallu of the saree should be heavier than the body of the saree.
- Zari: The saree should have a characteristic “Zari” or gold threadwork.
- Blurred joints: The joint between the pallu and the body of an original Kanjivaram silk saree is always zigzag-blurred.
- Shine: When kept at an angle towards the light, the saree will shine and the color will pop out.
To identify a pure Kanjivaram silk saree, you can also try the following:
- Pass the silk saree through a wedding ring. An original Kanjivaram saree will go through the ring orifice without any difficulty.
- Rub your palm on the saree to check the texture. A pure Kanchipuram saree is made from pure mulberry silk, which is different in texture as compared to fake ones.
