Varalakshmi Vratam is a highly revered ritual observed by women to invoke the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, prosperity, and well-being. This Vratam is celebrated with great devotion, and one of the key aspects of the ritual is the decoration of the Varalakshmi idol.

Decorating Varalakshmi Devi for the Vratam

Decorating the idol of Varalakshmi Devi is a sacred and joyful activity that allows you to express your devotion and creativity.

1. Preparing the Idol

Before beginning the decoration, it’s important to prepare the idol or kalash (a symbolic representation of the Goddess) with the utmost reverence. Start by thoroughly cleaning the idol with water and then drying it gently. Once clean, smear the idol with turmeric and kumkum, symbolizing purity and auspiciousness.

2. Dressing the Idol

The next step is to drape the idol in a beautiful saree. Opt for bright and vibrant colors such as red, yellow, or green, which are considered auspicious in Hindu rituals. If you’re using a kalash instead of an idol, wrap it in a new cloth and tie it securely. To further embellish the idol, adorn it with gold or silver jewelry such as necklaces, earrings, and bangles. Don’t forget to place a mangal sutra around the idol’s neck, symbolizing the goddess’s role as the divine consort.

3. Sankalpam (Vow)

Invite Goddess Lakshmi to reside in the kalash or idol by chanting mantras and offering flowers, turmeric, and kumkum. These offerings are a way to express your devotion and seek the Goddess’s blessings.

5. Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanamavali

Chant the 108 names of Goddess Lakshmi (Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanamavali) while offering flowers or akshata (uncooked rice mixed with turmeric) to the deity. This ritual is believed to please the Goddess and invoke her blessings.

6. Reciting the Varalakshmi Vratam Katha

One of the most important parts of the Vratam is reciting or listening to the story (katha) associated with Varalakshmi Vratam. The story explains the significance of the ritual and how it brings prosperity and blessings to the household.

7. Offering Naivedyam

Offer a variety of naivedyam (food offerings) to the Goddess. This typically includes sweets, fruits, and cooked items like pongal or payasam, which are considered sacred.

8. Aarti

Perform the aarti with a camphor or ghee lamp while singing devotional songs in praise of Goddess Lakshmi. The aarti is a powerful way to conclude the puja, symbolizing the dispelling of darkness and the welcoming of light and positivity.

9. Prasad Distribution

After the puja, distribute the prasad (food that was offered to the Goddess) to family members and neighbors. Sharing the prasad is a way of spreading the blessings of the Goddess and fostering a sense of community.

10. Udvasanam (Concluding the Puja)
