Look for the "soul" of the fabric. Authentic hand-painted Kalamkari will have slight irregularities in line thickness and color shading, as it is done with a bamboo pen (kalam). It will also have a faint, distinct earthy aroma—a result of the natural dyes and the milk-treatment process. Screen prints, by contrast, look perfectly symmetrical and lack that organic scent.
